The town stands among the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains, 15 miles inland from the coast at Aberaeron and 17 miles south of Aberystwyth. To the north of the town is Tregaron Bog (Cors Caron) which is a well known nature reserve.

Tregaron has been an important local centre since the early Middle Ages.
Stock and wool fairs were held in Tregaron and one of these, the Ffair Garon which was given its charter in 1292, is still held today.

In the 19th century drovers gathered here from the surrounding area to walk their sheep and cattle to London.

The old drovers' road to Abergwesyn starts at the Talbot Hotel in Tregaron Square.

The thriving wool industry led to the development in Tregaron of one of the first Welsh banks, the Bank of the Black Sheep (Banc y Ddafad Ddu).

One of the important industries was knitting using wool collected locally. During the 19th century whole families in the area of Doldre were involved in this activity to supplement their incomes. In 1851 there were 176 hosiers working in Doldre and the area was particularly known for its woollen socks, which were supplied to the miners of South Wales.

In the square at the centre of town stands a statue of a famous son of Tregaron, Henry Richard.

MP for Merthyr Tydfil, he was the first Secretary of the League of Nations.

Tregaron is also the birthplace of Twm Sion Cati, the Welsh Robin Hood, whose  hideout was said to be a cave in the hills above the town.

Today, Tregaron is a centre for rural tourism with walking, angling and bird watching being popular pastimes.
